All about the Funky Junky Monkeys

The Funky Junky Monkeys are a Malvern based five-piece party band playing covers and originals.  Their repertoire is a contagious mix of funk, punk, glam, indie and rock.  From 60’s psychedelia to modern day classics.  With a lot of dancing thrown in!

The band formed in 1998 when three musicians thought it would be a lark to play gigs dressed in monkey suits.  With a bizarre mix of techno and rap, early FJM performed their gigs incognito, behind their masks.  However, it was near impossible to see their instruments and also incredibly hot.  So they ditched the suits, got another guitarist and a drummer, and started playing lots of parties.

Ralph, Andy, Rob and Jem have been playing together since the early noughties but when Sharon joined on vocals and saxophone, the band really began to shine!

Since then, they have played hundreds of gigs at parties, weddings, festivals and . . . wakes!

They have a simple formula: play the songs you would like to hear at a house party.

FJM got so many bookings that they decided to use the money to put on a festival or two.  Five Pyramid Parties, two Godzilla’s, three Cwm Fests and over twenty years later, they are still going strong.  A veritable ‘party in a box’.

What you can expect to hear from FJM

For a typical party such as a wedding the Funky Junky Monkeys usually play two sets of music, each around one hour long.  If you have specific timings for your event we can adapt and fit in as required.

Our repertoire is always evolving but you can expect to hear some Buzzcocks, The Jam, Blondie, The Only Ones,  T-Rex, David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Small Faces, Tubeway Army, Dandy Warhols, Cockney Rebel, Foo Fighters, Chic, Jackie Wilson, Labelle, Wild Cherry, Happy Mondays plus a few of our own!

We are also happy to learn specific numbers for you – given the time.

What funky junky monkeys Need to play

We can bring everything we need or can fit in to an existing setup at a venue.  To setup with our full PA and lights will take at least two hours.  We have played in some tiny venues but ideally we need at least 3m x 4m of floor space.  If it’s outdoors some sort of rain cover is required . . . just in case!  We can run all our gear off one 13 amp supply.
